Ebay vs. Retail Giants - Levelling The Playing Field
Tue, Feb 6, 2007
Every once in a while I like to check product prices on Ebay and see how they actually level the retail playing field. This experiment is even more exciting when you do it with consumables such as razor blades, for instance.
Since I live in Australia, I have to go to the local supermarket-chain, called Woolworths to buy my Gillette blades.
The Gillette Mach3 Turbo 4 pack retails for AUS16.50.
Now head over to ebay.com.au and search for Gillette Mach3 Power (you know, the green one). You will see that there are a few companies selling blades in bulk.
I managed to grab an awesome deal the other day.
I paid $51+$10 shipping for 40 blades. This translates to $1.525 per blade as opposed to the retail price which is $4.125. The price difference is pretty significant. The quality is exactly the same.
If you live in the US, your opportunities to take advantage of this new phenomena are basically endless.
Welcome to the Long Tail of Retail folks! It’s coming from ALL directions now!
