By now I am sure you’ve heard the buzz about Web 2.0 marketing.

If you have been doing submissions to places like Digg, Netscape, ShoutWire and the like, you know how time consuming it can be.

If you aren’t, you’re leaving a lot of targeted traffic and links on the floor!

The same guys who wrote Authority Black Book, downloaded over 20,000 times since it came online less than 2 months ago, have come up with a tool that drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to do Web 2.0 promotion.

I highly recommend you check it out.

This thing is saving me lots of time to do other link building and marketing I was skimping on before.

And you won’t believe what they are including with this software – THAT you have to see to believe.

You can get the software from here for less than $50 in less than 24 hours!

Flickr, Vimeo, Bloglines…and maps

Here are 4 web 2.0 services I really do like. You can use them to share photos, videos, read RSS based content or find places. Enjoy.

Photos - www.flickr.com

Flickr is one of, if not the best, site for sharing photos online. With a nice, clean layout and easy-to-use tools, users can upload massive amounts of pictures and label them to their liking.

Using tags, users can search for photos of specific content and label their photos with tags so they’re easy to find.

Uploading tools allow batch uploading quickly, so users do not have to worry about sorting through photos they dislike. Flickr uses AJAX-technology extensively, so no page reloading occurs.

This means that users can add more tags to a photo or add a comment swiftly and without refreshing. Flickr is free but has some limitations, such as the amount a user can upload if they are not a “pro” member.

Video - www.vimeo.com

If Flickr is for photos, then Vimeo is its video counterpart. The site keeps a traditional, clean layout and is very simple. Users can upload video to share with people and friends via a contacts list.

One of the better features of Vimeo is that it makes most videos easily accessible.

All videos are converted to Quicktime, making them easy to view and download, but if the old format is what users normally like to view, Vimeo maintains it in its original context. Comments on videos are kept very clean and neat and the best part is that it’s free.

RSS - www.bloglines.com

Bloglines isn’t just for blogs. Users can use it to add pretty much any RSS feed-in. Owned by AskJeeves, this site allows users to keep track of all their favorite blogs via RSS.

Users can then log in from any computer to check their news and blog entries. Bloglines goal is to keep users happy.

Users can publish their own blog whilst they can share their favorite blogs with friends so they know what you read, and vice versa.

Locations - maps.google.com

All AJAX-based, Google Maps allows users to view the layout of any city or place in the world. Users can view a satellite photo of the area and zoom in, or just see which roads and streets are where.

Directions are now easier to read and find because the Google Maps works so well.

The Benefits of Becoming Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is a phrase that was first coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004. However the term is difficult to describe and understand as there is no universally accepted definition of it.

Web 2.0 does not mean the creation of a new world wide web but instead refers to the ongoing transition of the current web from being a collection of websites to that of a web of services which promote collaboration and content sharing among its users.

Therefore Web 2.0 is not a specific technology but rather an abstract term which describes this second generation of world wide web which consists of a mix of exciting and emerging technologies.

The two basic ideas behind this concept are:

  • a shift towards a web where the users generate the content through the introduction and implementation of wikis, blogs, communication tools and other social networking sites.
  • the storing of data and applications on web servers which will allow any user to access them entirely via a web browser.

Consequently it is widely believed that there will be shift away from locally based applications and greater move towards these web based services.

As a result Web 2.0 services have the potential to replace desktop applications for many purposes.

What are the benefits of Web 2.0?

The development of RIA technologies such as Ajax has added to the users’ experience of web based applications.

Other technologies include

  • Adobe Flash
  • Adobe Flex
  • open source OpenLaszlo which can also be used to develop RIA.

Many RIA techniques can be applied when developing Web 2.0 websites.

They can help provide a richer user experience such as

  • drag and drop
  • and any other functionality that can be implemented on the client side which does not have to be sent back to the server.

Also web 2.0 applications are much more responsive compared to the standard web browser which constantly needs to interact with the server.

Web 2.0 provides the look ad feel of standard desktop applications such as drag and drop.

The Read/Write web, as web 2.0 is also known as, can also benefit education.

It can allow students to gain access to various distributed content and the opinions of others. By adopting a policy of openness and sharing less well off students can have the same access to educational content as their more well off counterparts.

Also with web 2.0 there is a move away from static information presentation and a greater emphasis placed on the transfer of knowledge among peers.

Also the collaborative and interactive nature of web 2.0 means that students can seek the help of others should they encounter problems.

Overall web 2.0 offers many benefits for its users.

Web 2.0 sees a move away from the traditional web which presents information statically and emphasises the dynamic presentation of information.

In future it is predicted that web 2.0 applications will have the ability to replace much of the functionality offered by desktop applications. Already Google docs and spreadsheets offers the same functionality as word and excel.
