The DOs and DON’Ts of Blog Etiquette

The first thing for any blog writer to consider is that their blogs are in the public domain. What is also to consider is that blog remain in the public domain. There a tools such as scanners and archiving application which record content so even if after a day you take down your article, they potentially remain available to the public. This can have negative consequences as something that you might write off the cuff as a teenager may come back to haunt you as an adult and therefore potentially damaging your career or future prospects. It really is not a matter of censoring your opinion but having a mature and rational style of writing. Remember you are publishing to a worldwide audience, the World Wide Web is a global phenomenon, something with a “.com.au†domain name can be read by an American, Asian and European audience. The fact remains that people reading your material will judge you and often will judge you negatively. It is something that writers have to think about and consequently accept. Along with the judging be prepared consequences and accept responsibility for content that you publish. The previous point leads me nicely into my next point: accuracy. Always be accurate and factual, something that you have “heard†and without accuracy will not be appreciated by your readers. A blog writer’s reputation and a blog site’s reputation are built on their articles accuracy and how they can be trusted. Other media are prime examples: consider how some tabloid newspapers are considered to be “thrash†because their reporting is often inaccurate or how TV stations are castigated for poor reporting. Common courtesy suggests that a writer should always use a spellchecker on their material. The web is casual and information but nobody “wnts 2 rd loadza txt†like the previous five words and if readers find that continuous spelling and grammar mistakes then they are far more likely to leave even if the article is interesting. The easier your can make your article to read then the more likely readers will read it and the more readers you will gain. Although it is far to argue that spelling mistakes vary, some mistakes are laugh out loud whilst others are barely noticeable. Reader tolerances also vary so as a writer you should pay particular attention to comments left by readers regarding spelling and grammar. All good writers speak from the heart and write their own voice. You should write about how you feel on issues. There are plenty of news sites out there; people are reading your article for your opinion. Whilst there are many news sites broadcasting and reporting on the same material there is only one of you in the entire world: this is what makes your blogs so interesting and unique. Finally, a thorough read through the article that you have just written will ensure that any glaring inaccuracies are corrected before publishing. |
