Is Your Content Relevant or Does it Suck?
Wed, Dec 5, 2007
Pardon the title but, based on the activity at Digg-stlye sites, it seems that using the word “suck” gets attention. We wanted you to read this because, as far as we can tell, there is a lot of content out there that does… suck.
Why so much mediocrity in the blogosphere? Well, in our opinion, most bloggers see their niche from a narrowed, self-centered viewpoint. The original bloggers may have written for their own amusement but today’s authority sites and social media marketers need to be relevant.
Again…
For your social media marketing efforts to succeed, it is imperative that your content be relevant — either very current or extremely compelling to your niche.
Here’s one easy way to create relevant content. Simply, join a very current niche specific conversation.
How do you find current niche specific conversations?
Here’s what we suggest… Do A or B or both.
A. Head over to Google Trends and sign up to the RSS feed. This gives you a list of the hottest keyword searches for the last hour or two. You need to look for a “trend in the trends” which, like we said, are refreshed every hour or two. Find a niche related keyword “trend” and quickly post thoughtful content related to that keyword.
For example: Right now I see that “healthytoys.org” is being searched on a lot. A good friend of Web2Center is More4Kids.info, this would be a perfect story for their site to post about and utilize this technique.
B. Now you may not watch the news or read the paper anymore but you’d better be a blog reader. And… you better keep tabs on the BIG bloggers in your niche. Fortunately, this gets easier everyday.
Check out the NY Times Blogrunner service for example. This site aggregates the BIG bloggers in selected niches. All you have to do is check to recent headlines in your niche and continue the conversation.
So, that all you need to do to instantly become relevant and stop sucking
