12 Tips for Finding the Right Niche for Your Authority Site

Authority Sites

Finding the right niche for your authority website isn’t always easy.

You need a topic that will:

  • interest you enough that you can stick with it and remain enthusiastic about working on it
  • be broad enough that you can keep adding content to it for years
  • draw a good amount of traffic
  • be easy to monetize.

While you’re brainstorming for niche ideas, you may want to consider this approach to coming up with a winning site topic:

  • Think of two broad topics that interest you, and combine them. For example, photography + home business = photography home business.
  • Find several niche topics that result from combining these broader topics; these smaller niches could be the categories for your authority site.
  • Does this result in an overall niche where people are able and willing to spend money? (Tip: Hobbies, travel, and leisure activities are things people tend to be quite willing to spend money on! Also business-to-business topics tend to be profitable.)
  • Consider the problems, questions, and needs experienced by the people targeted by this niche.
  • What kinds of solutions and information can you provide to these people, and what format would be best for delivering your solutions and information to them?
  • Spend some time visiting online forums related to each of the two broad topics, plus the niches where they intersect, and see what problems people have.

In particular, what questions keep coming up over and over?

These are an excellent indicator of successful content or products you can provide. More things to consider about your potential website topic:

    • Keep an eye out for niches where you can provide not only a great authority website, but also a great infoproduct (or even better, a series of products) that your targeted audience would be willing to pay for.
    • Also, are there interesting people related to this niche who you could interview or do a podcast with?
    • Are there any available You-Tube videos that fit in with your niche, or could you create some of your own videos for it?
    • Are there good affiliate program products for either of your broader niches, or for both of them combined? Also check ClickBank and see if there are any good ebooks already written related to your two larger topics that you could sell.
    • One strength in finding your niche by combining two larger niches is that you can draw traffic, links, content, etc. from both niches. Do you see possibilities for that in the two larger niches you’ve chosen?
    • Is your topic in danger of becoming outdated in a few years - rendering all your efforts worthless?
    • If you can only think of one general topic that really interests you enough to write about it, how about combining it with a specific geographic location? Or with a specific group of people?

Even if you’re tempted to just hurry up and get started building your authority site, don’t rush through your niche-finding phase.

Developing your website is going to involve a lot of time and effort.

You’ll be very glad you took the time to come up with an outstanding authority site concept that you can love, live with, and profit from for a long time!
